TREATMENT OF HYPERLIPIDAEMIA
Hyperlipidaemia is managed primarily by conservative measures
- Correction of overweight:
- provide a calorie-restricted, lipid-lowering diet
- prescribe a suitable daily exercise programme
- regular follow-up with reinforcement of motivation and compliance
- Lipid-lowering diet:
- restrict saturated fats and replace with unsaturated fats
- replace in part with foods providing complex carbohydrate and soluble fibre
- restrict dietary cholesterol
- Removal of underlying causes.
- Aerobic exercise:
- regular aerobic exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle and lessens several coronary risk factors
- for lifelong compliance it needs to be enjoyable, convenient, and preferably social, hence the programme should fit individual needs
Drug treatment of hyperlipidaemia
- Drug treatment is instituted only after a careful trial of conservative measures fails to achieve the target values.
- Always continue diet when prescribing medication.
- Before considering medication, always obtain two measurements oc:\www
- plasma cholesterol
- plasma triglyceride
- LDL cholesterol
- HDL cholesterol
- Drug therapy should be based upon LDL cholesterol values.
- Actions, indications, side effects and use of the major lipid-lowering drugs are described in Section 4 of ‘Prevention of Coronary Heart disease - Scientific Background and New Clinical Guidelines’. These descriptions should be read in conjunction with the manufacturers’ data sheets.
