Study patients

To evaluate mobile phone EMI interferences on ICD patients, we have studied a wide range of products on the market in a population of 25 patients (22 males, 3 females) out of 92 implanted in our Centre from 1989 through 1997. Patients selection was carried out, giving the preference to the younger most active members of the group, who had re-established a good social life.
Defibrillators under control have been from Telectronics (n = 7; mod. 4210, 4215, 4310); CPI (n = 6; mod. Ventak PRX, Mini); Medtronic (n = 7; mod. Jewel); Ventritex (n = 3; mod. Cadet); Ela Medical (n = 3; mod. Defender).
The cellular telephones used for the study were:
1) for the analogic transmission TACS system a Sony mobile phone (CM R111, 2 Watts);
2) for the digital transmission GSM system a Motorola mobile phone (MG14A11, 2 Watts).
