Abstract

The results of randomised prospective trials and meta-analysis studies have demonstrated that in high-risk patient for sudden cardiac death (patient with previous myocardial infarction or congestive heart failure) b-blockers and amiodarone are the only two classes of drugs that improved survival rate. An important finding from both CAMIAT and EMIAT studies is the demonstration of an important synergistic interaction between b-blockers and amiodarone. Despite the clear evidence of efficacy of b-blockers these drugs are still underused. The best available antiarrhythmic medical therapy should include b-blockers alone or in combination with amiodarone.
