Study population

Eighty-five consecutive patients with CAF underwent a total of 120 ECV; their mean age was 62 ± 10 years, the mean left atrium diameter was 49.4 ± 8.1 mm; 82% of them had an associated heart disease. A history of arrhythmias had been present for a mean of 25 months (range: 0.5-324 months) while the mean duration of the last episode leading to ECV was 76 days, with a range from 2 days to more than 3 years. Table I reports the main clinical characteristics of the patients.
