Abstract

The aim of the present study was to assess efficacy, safety and patients' tolerability of low energy internal atrial cardioversion in a group of 19 patients, mainly with chronic persistent atrial fibrillation. Low energy internal atrial cardioversion resulted highly effective for restoring sinus rhythm in AF patients, with an efficacy of 95%. A wide inter-subject variability in shock-induced discomfort was found; however, employing a step-up protocol for shock delivery, low energy cardioversion was performed in fully conscious patients, without sedation, in around two thirds of the patients.
