Between December 1991 and September 1997, 132
consecutive patients underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation of atrial tachycardia,
refractory to drug therapy. Sixtynine patients were male and 63 were female. The mean age
was 32 ± 12 year (range 6-65). Seventy-two patients were free of organic cardiac disease,
forty presented with dilated cardiomyopathy, 7 had valvular and 13 congenital heart
disease (4 atrial septal defect, 1 corrected transposition of great vessels and 8
interatrial septum aneurysm). The diagnosis of atrial tachycardia has been made 3 months
to 24 years before ablation. All patients had been treated with 2 to 7 (mean 3.2)
antiarrhythmic drugs.
