Abstract

Vasovagal manoeuvres in middle-aged subjects, who had
never experienced syncope, can elicit positive responses more frequently in athletes than
in sedentary individuals.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of neurally-mediated syncope in a
population of middle-aged men practicing endurance physical activity, in non regularly
exercising normal subjects and in age-matched sedentary control. One hundred and
twenty-nine consecutive healthy middle-aged subjects referred to the Sport Medical Center
of Reggio Emi-lia were enrolled to the study. They were divided into two groups according
to their training level. Fifty-six sedentary subjects enrolled among hospital staff were
the control group. The anamnestic data, including the presence of syncopal episodes in the
subject's medical history, were collected during the clinical examination; organic cardiac
diseases were excluded. The prevalence of syncope in trained middle-aged athletes was
higher than in the other two groups. Moreover positive tilt-test results were very
frequent in trained athletes as compared to the percentage of positive results in general
population which are reported in literature.
