Patients and methods

Between Jan. 1982 and Nov. 1997 1315 pacemakers were implanted in 1153 patients (1-4 PM-devices, m 1.3). The mean age of the 573 (49.6%) women was between 19-96 y (m 76.8 ± 9.4 y) and ranged from 22-97 y (m 74.3 ± 10.3 y) in the 580 men (50.4%) (not significant).
Data were collected prior PM-implantation, prior discharge and also during follow-up controls with using the European Pacemaker Patient Identification Card. Data were stored in a database and analysed using several statistical methods to test for significance of the differences between several cohorts.
