Introduction

Ventricular fibrillation and sudden death may occur in
patients with the ECG pattern of right bundle branch block (RBBB), and right precordial ST
segment elevation1-3. The etiopathogenesis of this
syndrome and the pathophysiology of the sudden arrhythmic cardiac arrest are still
unknown. The ECG abnormalities have been found in subjects who experienced ventricular
fibrillation either without heart disease or with clinical and pathological demonstration
of cardiomyopathy1-5.
The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of the ECG patterns of RBBB,
right precordial ST segment elevation, or both, and to investigate the underlying
cardiovascular pathology in a large consecutive series of sudden "arrhythmic"
deaths in young people that were prospectively collected in the Veneto Region of Italy.
