Atrial fibrillation is known as a major public health
issue, its incidence and related complications increasing with greater age. Due to the
disappointing results with drug therapy, a considerable interest has emerged in
non-pharmacological methods of treatment to prevent atrial fibrillation recurrences.
Following continuous improvement of pacemaker technology, cardiac pacing has been
recently considered as one of the non-pharmacological alternative approach. Despite very
encouraging results, the role of conventional cardiac pacing solely for the goal of
preventing atrial arrhythmias is not clearly established. Moreover, the concept of atrial
fibrillation prevention through permanent cardiac pacing remains very complex and may
involve very different mechanisms. Among the later techniques, multisite atrial pacing has
been proposed, with various pacing mode configuration.
