Abstract

A general overview is given of arrhythmogenic mechanisms such as enhanced normal and abnormal automaticity, triggered activity and re-entry. It is emphasised that usually an arrhythmia is due to more than one arrhythmogenic mechanism. A brief discussion is provided regarding the question whether the trigger or the substrate of the arrhythmia should be abolished to effectively prevent arrhythmias.
