The dual defibrillation in the treatment of atrial fibrillation

Abstract

The treatment of atrial fibrillation represents one of the therapeutic challenges of modern cardiology. Because of the poor efficacy of pharmacological therapy in the management of atrial fibrillation several non-pharmacological options have been introduced including, recently, the implantable atrial and dual defibrillator. The dual defibrillator includes a dual-chamber pacing, a new dual chamber detection criterion for rejection of supraventricular tachycardia and several detection and treatment modalities of atrial fibrillation. In the Center of Trento we implanted nine dual defibrillator and during the follow-up of 7.3 months (range 1-17 mths) correct functioning of the device without any complications has been documented.
