Although there is extensive literature on cellular electrophysiology and atrial activation in animal models, there continues to be little information on how cellular electrophysiology in concert with tissue architecture determines the conduction properties of the human atrium.
Early data from a programme of human studies, incorporating both epicardial and non-contact endocardial mapping, are providing some insight into the relationship between atrial structure, ultrastructure and conduction in the normal and arrhythmic human atrium, and have been presented at international meetings in past 12 months.
