Introduction

Clinical reports have been accumulating demonstrating the efficacy of atrial pacing techniques in prevention and termination of atrial tachyarrhythmias including atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation (AF)1-3. The mechanisms underlying efficacy of a variety of techniques utilized in this effort are sparsely understood and investigated. Yet the clinical use of device therapy and new device technology utilizing these methods is rapidly proliferating4-6. As a result it is necessary to reexamine the mechanisms of efficacy in both preventive and termination algorithms and correlate these with results of clinical trials.
