Abstract

Proarrhythmic action of antiarrhythmic drugs has been more and more described in the last years whereas is less known and perhaps underestimated an analogous action due to non cardiac drugs that, expecially when associated, can induce both hypo and hyperkinetic life-threatening arrhythmias. Gastroenterological drugs, anaesthetics, antibiotics, antimicrobials, a lot of drugs acting on central nervous system, antihystaminics and other endogenous or exogenous substances seem to have proarrhythmic action not only in laboratory experiments but also in clinical setting. Considering the trend to an increased use of pharmacological associations it will be necessary to have the greatest care in the prescription of these drugs selecting the patients at risk of arrhythmias and monitoring their electrophysiologic behaviour.
